Indiana Jones and the Ruins of Peril - Chapter 1

This is my attempt at the first chapter of an Indy forum novel. I hope you like it.

CHAPTER ONE

Peru, 1910

The valley of the dead was lush and full, the very image of the jungle. The canopy of trees hid the things inside the jungle from view, making it impossible to search the area well. The mountains rose high above the jungle mists, their peaks raising into the sky. A rag-tag group of travellers came down the mountain. Dressed in a khaki shirt and denim pants, the leader hacked at the foilage with a machete. His name was Erik Cleveland, an explorer and treasure hunter

Behind him followed three helpers, all native Peruvians. They were tall, and carried heavy supplies and backpacks. They also were seekers of money, coming from poor families.

Erik Cleveland looked back at his guides as the fully entered the jungle, which sat in a large canyon that intertwined in the mountains. Erik observed his surroundings as he walked, looking at the area. Then he noticed a carved block, sitting by the path they were walking on. "Stop," was he command as he removed the leaves to reveal a skeleton with gaping holes for eyes and a collar of jaws around its neck. By it was laying a gold vessel unlike anything he had seen before.

As he stooped to pick it up, he noticed the greed in his helpers' eyes. They stared at it with lust. His hand touched the vase, then began to sizzle and burn. He let out a horrified scream that echoed throughout the canyon.

The natives stumbled back, watching Cleveland's hand melt away. They began to run for their lives, through jungle, to get away from the "curse". WZSST! was the sound of a blowgun being fired as a call echoed throughout the mountains.
