Chapter 6

Anthony and Lauren escaped from the gangsters, driving to the edge of London. Anthony pulled off to the side of the road and turned to Lauren, who said,
"And you thought I was dangerous."
He grinned at her as another car approached. They ducked as he said,
"Maybe you should stay away from me."
"I'm too involved now," she said softly, "And I wouldn't stay away even if you forced me to."
"But what about finding out...?"
She brushed his words off and said, "We'll have time for that. Trust me," giving him her lopsided grin.
"Where have I heard that before?" as they sneaked back into town towards Anthony's flat.

Shorty looked around and saw one of the gangsters coughing up blood. He went up to him, pulled him to his gaze and said,
"All right, why were shooting at the girl?"
"Our target was the man. He betrayed our honor."
"Who is he?"
The man gasped for some air as he uttered the words, "He goes by the name of Brody."
Brody? Shorty heard that name before as the man died in his hands.
Shorty walked away from the man towards his hotel. Boy, is Indy going to be surprised!

The Joneses arrived at Shorty's hotel, not finding him in as Eric asked,
"Ok, Dad, give. Why did Laurie come here?"
"Long story," he muttered as he thought of places where Shorty might have gone.
"Then tell us the long story!" Michael exclaimed, "We're 21 years old, Dad."
Indy looked at his sons, republicas of Kate, sighed, and said,
"All right, I'll tell you," pointing to the bar entrance of the hotel, "Let's go in there."
They went into the bar and sat at a table near the entrance. Settled at the table with a glass of local ale, Indy held his breath, looked at his sons, and said, "It started years ago, when I was 25. I was teaching in London, my first teaching post after getting my degree in France."
He took a sip of his drink and said, "I had a bright student in the class, the daughter of the department chair. She had this impact in my life, just like your mother did."
"So what happened?" Michael asked.
"Deirdre and I went on a few digs together. We loved each other and after a while, we got married on a cruise ship, heading to Brazil."
"You were married?" Eric said astonished.
"Did Mom know?" Michael asked.
"Your mother did know. I told her when I she found a picture of Deirdre in bedroom while we were dating."
"What happened to Deirdre?" Eric asked, "Is she living in London?"
Indy shook his head and said, "She was killed in the Amazon after being married a month. Plane crash."
"Why didn't you tell us?" Michael asked.
"I thought it would be best not for you to know," smiling weakly, "Your mother disagreed with me, but I thought you didn't want to know about the past."
"Dad," Eric asked, "How did Lauren know?"
"She found a box I had hidden in the attic with a few of Deirdre's letters and her picture."
"A box?" Michael remembered, "The box Mom gave you?"
Indy nodded as Eric asked,
"But where's Lauren?"
"I think," another voice said, "I can answer your question."
