One thing to think about Steve. The Communist doctrine observed by the Soviet Union would have predispositioned them to believe that druids and mystic power were simply part of an elaborate scheme to fool the weak minded.
That doesn't mean you can't make the Stonehenge angle work; you just have to find a way to reconcile the skeptical viewpoint of the Soviets. It is a known fact that the KGB (or whichever incarnation of the Soviet State Security force was in power at the time of your story) believed in and experimented with psychic power.
Maybe you could have the Russkies looking for a scientific explanation for the deired effect.
