I think that there were two large World's Fairs in the U.S. that year - one in New York City, and the other in San Francisco (more specifically, on Treasure Island).

I believe that the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair started in mid or late February, and ran until the end of October 29 (ending about a month or two earlier than they had planned).

So I believe that the Golden Spider story currently takes place in either January or early February, which would be summer in Brazil. Professor Jones could have taken that semester off from teaching to go on an expedition like he is in the story (in real life, professors taking a semester or two off from teaching and then coming back to teach isn't very common, but not absolutely unheard of).

And the weather in San Francisco at that time of year would usually range from cloudy to rainy, and daytime temperatures usually range from 45-55 degrees F (and usually around 50-60 degrees F around the rest of the Bay Area... it gets cold! :( ). And since San Francisco is next to the water, it often experiences fog (although the rest of the Bay Area usually does not experience that fog)... actually, both San Francisco and London are the two 'big cities' in the world famous for its fog, just like San Francisco and Rome are the two 'big cities' in the world famous for its hills (just thought I'd throw that in there :) ).

Note that both the Golden Gate Bridge (seen in Chapter 1, running from San Francisco north toward Marin County) and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (seen in Chapter 5, running from San Francisco east toward Oakland) were already operational by 1939. If you click here, you can see that Treasure Island is located in the Bay in between San Francisco and Oakland. As a matter of fact, on the map you can see where Pier 41 is (where Indiana Jayne and Tessa were in the second scene of Chapter 5).

Sorry about burdening you with all this info. It's probably more than you wanted to know. :(

P.S. - Famous author Jack London was from Oakland, California. Just thought I'd let you know that. ;)
