: : : That's an easy question. We all write fan fiction because we want to be in control of our favorite characters while still being able to remold it into what we want it to be. It's all about being able to control an outcome, and I think that's why any writer of fiction wants to do, whether using a Lucas owned and created character or an original one.

: :     Tthat's part of it, I suppose. Perhaps later I can go into more detail, but to me it all boils down to telling a good story - kind of like being a storyteller at a campfire or whatever. As a story goes along, it oftentimes takes on a life of its own (sometimes in ways not previously expected), so sometimes the interesting part is just following the way the story takes you (although keeping consistency to what was written before in the story is absolutely paramount!).

: :     Well, I'll contribute more to this discussion a little later when I have more time. I hope that helped, though! :)

: I agree with both points above. I also think the added incentive is that unlike a completely original novel, the author of fanfic can use well established characters (thus avoiding any usually necessary character set-up) and just get straight into telling a good story :-)

: Another angle is that nagging thought that everyone must experience at some point - seeing a movie/TV programme/etc. and thinking "and what happens next?". Everyone has an imagination, and fanfic is a great, light-hearted way to express their imagination and let off a bit of creativity at the same time.

: Just my two pennies (not cents - British after all) :-)

i agree with shaggy, goodsport and muppet here. also writing for the internet is nice because each website is more specialized. instead of having one or two websites on the internet with everyone there and not knowing what everyone is interested in reading about, there are many specialized websites where you know what the readers of each one wants to read.

for example, this is an indiana jones website and obviously the stories should be about indiana jones. on a star trek website the stories will be about star trek, and so on. at least you know on each website what should be written, and what should not be written (in this case, non indiana jones stories). which would make me feel better if i wrote something because at least i would know that it would be read by fans of that ffforum (whether they would like it or not is a different story)
