Chapter 15
Kate slumped into one of the overstuffed chairs and said, ìIn the years Iíve known him, I would never have guessed ---ì
ìRemember, Kate, that Mussolini was Hitlerís allies. And Italy was part of the communist regime.î
ìTypical history lesson,î she commented as she stood up, ìI think Iíve had too much for one day,î and gesturing the suit, ìAnd this suit.î
ìWhere are you going?î
ìTo the place I bought a while ago.î
ìI thought you had a suiteÖî
ìIn this building I do,î she replied, ìbut a year ago I bought I beautiful house just outside of Rome.î
Surprised, ìHow come you didnít tell me?î
ìI was going to surprise you one of these days. To take all of us on vacation,î she replied ìbut then I got pregnant with Lauren and you know the rest.î
ìI see,î still in disbelief.
ìCome on,î gingerly grabbed his arm, ìYou can have your first look at it.î
ìSure,î as she led him out to the company car. Kate gave the driver the directions to the place and sat back in the seat as Indy said,
ìYou surprise me, Kate. I thought you donít care about money.î
ìI still donít,î looking at him, ìbut when I saw this house. I couldnít take my breath away from it.î
The car pulled into a long driveway and parked in the front. The driver opened the door and helped Kate out. Indy got out of the car and looked at the house.
ìBeautiful, isnít it?î Kate said.
ìIíd say,î he looked down from the driveway. The house was on a hill, overlooking the city. The house was of peach stone and balconies at both ends of the house. Kate opened the door and said,
ìEntrez, Monsieur Jones,î gesturing with a hand.
Indy smiled as he went into the house, impressed. Kate locked the door and said,
ìThereís about five bedrooms upstairs, a kitchen, dining room, a study, and an indoor pool. I even have a vineyard outside. Workers come in to cultivate the grapes for wine.î
ìIíve got to hand it to you, Kate. This is beautiful.î
ìThanks. Itís much better than the stuffy suite,î shuddering, ìAll plastic and Formica.î
Indy laughed, ìTypical woman.î
Kate smiled as she walked up the marble staircase, ìIím going to change and take a shower. Look around, Indy, this is yours, too.î

Chapter 16
While Kate took a shower, Indy took a look around the place. It was a virtual palace as far as he was concerned. He walked into the study and noticed pictures everywhere. He picked up the closest one --- a picture of Kate when she was a baby with her mother and father --- and smiled.
He looked at the various pictures around him --- of her, him, and the kids. She even had a picture of Lauren when she was first born. He picked up the picture, stared at it, and thought My little girl and wife.
Indy then looked at the phone on the desk. He picked it up, dialed a number, and heard a male voice,
ìHello?î
ìHi, Dad. Itís me.î
ìJunior! How is Paris?î
ìIím not there. Kate and I are in Rome.î
ìKate? I thought she was in Paris.î
ìShe had emergency business to attend to here,î he replied, ìHow are the kids?î
ìTheyíre fine. The boys are walking everywhere and getting into everything.î
ìAnd Lauren?î
ìSheís happy as a clam,î he said, ìSheís getting bigger by the minute.î
Indy smiled as Henry said, ìI have to be going, Junior, I was in the middle of feeding the boys dinner.î
ìOk, Dad. Tell them I love them.î
ìWill do,î as he hung up.
Indy hung up the phone and looked out the door. He left the study and went up the stairs to the bedrooms. He peered in and saw Kate sitting in front of bureau. She was calmly brushing her hair when Indy entered the room and singing to herself,
ìDonít be a brontosaurus.
Donít be a brontosaurus.
Donít you ever walk that way.
Donít you ever walk that way.
Itís the right thing to do.

Donít be tired of hanging around and dreaming your life away.

Indy started clapping at the doorway. Kate was startled a bit and looked at the doorway. Indy was grinning at her and said,
ìYou should start up again, Kate.î
ìAt my age?î laughing, ìIím ancient.î
ìNot to me,î as he walked to her and kissed the back of her neck.
Kate smiled a bit as he put his arms around her and asked him,
ìHow did I ever let you get away the first time?î
He stared at her reflection in the mirror and said, ìYou were afraid and had every right to be. But thatís behind us now.î
She took one of his hands and held it with her own, tracing the finger where he wore his wedding band. She smiled a bit and said, ìIf you wanted to take that off for your adventures, I would understand.î
Indy pulled her to her feet, looked in her eyes, and said, ìNever,î as he kissed her.

Chapter 17
Indy and Kate headed for Diabloís house in Rome. Indy was wearing his usual professor suit while Kate had on a lilac dress with a dark purple scarf tired around the neck. She went up to the door and knocked as a maid came out,
ìSignora Tyler and Signor Jones, Signor Diablo and his sister are waiting in the dining room.î
ìGrazie,î Kate said as they walked through the marble hallway. Diablo peered out of the doorway and said,
ìDr. Tyler and Dr. Jones, welcome to me home.î
ìItís beautiful, Andreas,î Kate said, ìand Iíve told you to call me Katherine countless of times.î
ìForce of habit,î he admitted, ìwhen your grandfather built this a number of years ago, I had to refer to him as Dr. Tyler.î
ìDinner is served, sir,î said the maid.
ìThank you, Gianna,î as he gestured with his hand, ìThis way.î
He helped Kate to her seat and Indy sat next to her. Diablo looked at them and said,
ìIt puzzles me that you have different last names, Katherine.î
ìItsí mainly professional reasons,î Indy said, ìBut she still goes by Mrs. Jones.î
Kate smiled at him as a maid brought out a bottle of wine and glasses, ìWould you like some wine, Katherine? Dr. Jones?î
ìPlease,î as she held out her glass and Indy did the same. Indy looked around and asked,
ìWhere is Serena?î
ìSheís due back at any time.î
Just then the door slammed shut. Diablo smiled and said, ìThere she is now. Serena,î he called, ìPlease come into the dining room.î
ìIn a minute.î
A woman with jet-black hair like Diablo walked in. Diablo smiled at his sister and said,
ìSerena, Iím sure you remember Dr. Tyler.î
ìOf course,î the young woman smiled at Kate as Diablo said, ìThis is her husband, Dr. Indiana Jones.î
ìThe famous archeologist?î she inquired.
ìRight,î keep his face emotionless. Kate squeezed his hand under the hand as Diablo said,
ìHeís here to ask about Franz, Serena.î
The girl paled a bit and said, ìThat was a long time ago.î
ìSerena,î Kate said, ìplease. Itís important.î
ìWhy?î
Indy cleared this throat and asked, ìDo you know of the Spear of Destiny?î

Chapter 18
Serenaís eyes widened and said, ìWhat of it, Dr. Jones?î
ìDo you know where it is?î
ìNot exactly,î she said.
ìSerena!î Diablo roared, ìYou answer to them at once.î
Kate held out her hand and said, ìGentlemen, please,î then looked at Serena, ìwould you feel better if you told me in private?î
The girl looked at Kate and slowly nodded. Kate smiled and said, ìBut first dinner, then we shall talk.î
Diablo nodded and had the maid bring the meal to them. Indy leaned over to her and whispered,
ìThank you.î
ìSure thing,î smiling a bit.
After dinner, Kate and Serena were locked up in Diabloís study. Diablo looked at Indy and said,
ìYour wife is an extraordinary woman, Dr. Jones.î
ìSheís been this way ever since Iíve known her,î grinning a bit.
ìHave you known her a long time?î
ìBefore in college, we drifted apart afterwardsÖî
ìAnd you met her again years of being apart,î Diablo finished for him.
ìAbout four years ago, yes. We got married the following year in India.î
ìAnd you have three children now. Am I right?î
Indy nodded as Diablo said, ìKatherine talks about them constantly. Sheís proud of them as well as you.î
ìWhatís the pry of our personal life?î intrigued.
ìI didnít intend to,î looking him, ìI was just saying how much sheís approachable than her grandfather. Sheís like a gentle deer in the forest.î
ìThat she is,î nodding, ìThat she is.î
