Chapter 19
Kate and Serena were seated in Diablo’s study. Kate sat on the desk as Serena sat on the couch in front of it. Kate looked at the girl, smiled a bit, and said,
“Ok, Serena. Tell me what happened?”
The dark-haired girl looked at Kate as she said, “I was in love with him, Dr. Tyler –“
“Call me Katherine, Serena,” smiling at her.
The girl nodded and took a deep breath. She looked at Kate and said,
“We met in the plazzo. I was only fifteen and he was twenty-six. At first we were just friends, then we fell in love. I knew he was a Nazi, but I didn’t care.”
Kate nodded a bit and said, “And your family didn’t approve?”
Serena nodded and said, “They called me a traitor to my heritage. I didn’t care. I loved Franz. He even gave me this,” as she drew out a chain from under her blouse that held a simple diamond ring, “and promised to marry me.”
“And he got killed?” Kate asked.
Serena nodded, tears streaming down her face, “An officer came to my door to give me a telegram that he was dead. I was in shock for weeks, months,” as she looked at Kate, “You can’t understand this.”
“You’d be surprised,” looking at the girl, “I’ve lost so much when I was younger – my parents, my first love, and then my first fiancÈ. Money doesn’t buy everything.”
“Do you ever think of your first love?”
“I do,” shedding tears; “I was fortunate enough to find him again after several years.”
“Dr. Jones?” the girl questionably.
Kate nodded as she pointed to a simple ring on her right hand, “See this ring?”
“I’ve always admired it,” Serena admitted, “but with all your money ---“
“I know I could afford a nicer one, but its’ special to me,” as she held it to her heart, “Dr. Jones first gave it to me while we were in college. After we broke up, I still kept it on my hand as a reminder.”
“Why did you leave him?”
Kate told a deep breath and said, “Promise you won’t tell anyone?”
The girl nodded as Kate said, “I was pregnant with his child. I thought it would be best if he didn’t know about it. I knew he wanted to be an archeologist, and this would be in the way of it.”
“I never read about any baby ---“
“No one knew, except my parents. I miscarried in my fourth month.”
Serena looked at this woman, a woman she thought never acted like an ordinary human being, and went up to her and hugged her.
Kate’s eyes misted a bit as Serena said, “Hold on.”
The girl moved some books and pulled out a bundle of letters. She handed them to Kate and said,
“Here, everything Franz wrote to me is in there.”
“Thank you. I’ll protect them,” as she put a hand on the girl’s shoulder, “and give them back.”
As Kate headed to the door, Serena looked at Kate and said,
“It’s nice to know you’re human, Katherine. And you don’t let your money control your life.”
“I try,” smiling a bit, “but it isn’t easy.”
