: : Holding a small golden idol, the pedestal stood waiting in a shimmering shaft white light. Glancing around the Vietnamese man took in the surrounding rock walls. Vines clung to the damp stone along with years of dust and human sacrifices. The hall he had just exited had been laden by trap after trap, all of them sprung and halted mid-kill. Jones had been through. He could tell by the expert, narrow escapes. But where was he now? The prized idol lay just ahead and Jones was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps the fresh, telltale splotches of blood had been his last? Valgn Hong shook his head. Jones was to smart for that.
: : That was right. Jones was too smart to simply walk straight up to the idol and pick off of its pedestal. Slowly Valgn resurveyed the area. The shaft of light. That had to be the ticket. How would one avoid it, why go around it, of course. That’s when he saw the dark, hated figure across the way creeping along the outer edge of the circle of light, his eyes trained on the pedestal. Valgn laughed.
: : Indy, balancing carefully on the balls of his feet nearly fell head first into the light, as a loud, sickeningly familiar laugh rang through the circular chamber. He glanced up, his eyes searching the darkness past the pedestal. There, in the opening, that crazy, madman, Valgn!! Indy shook his head and glanced to his right then left trying to get better balance on his precarious perch.
: : Valgn watched the figure across the way searching for something. Knowing the man, and never having trusted him since they first met, Valgn slowly pulled Indy’s Webly from his own belt and trained the barrel on him.
: : “Hold it wight der Dr. Jones.” He said, his voice high pitched, like a boys. He shook his head, wishing he had remembered to disguise but it was already to late.
: : “What do you want, Valgn?” Jones shouted across the divider of light, his voice was labored as though he was worried about something.
: : “ You know what I want, Jones.” Valgn shouted back, “And I will get it.” With that he pulled the trigger shooting a bullet just above Indy’s head.
: : Indiana ducked instinctively and for a moment he was confused as to how the Valgn had so quickly acquired a gun, then he remembered that the idiot had stolen his own gun.
: : “You know, I think I forgot how I’m supposed to get whatever it is you want!” he shouted back, edging silently towards a flat, lightless area.
: : “Oh you know, Dr. Jones.” Valgn was becoming irritated, he had already told Jones what to do outside the temple. “Get the idol.” He screamed aiming the gun at the moving figure and squeezing the trigger three times.
: : As the bullets exploded around him Indy thought of something. He smiled at the idea. It was crazy but it just might work. Taking a flying leap he landed squarely on the platform. Standing, he surveyed the area. He remembered that the bullets had been whizzing through the lighted area and either the bullets were to fast for the trap to detect them, or there wasn’t a trap at all. If he were fast he could get the idol and run out the front entrance easily, it wasn’t that far. But he had to make sure his gun was empty. Crouching down Indy recalled that four shots had been fired, and before Valgn had acquired it, the gun had five bullets left in it. That left one more. All he had to do was get Valgn to fire that last bullet and then grab the idol. Easily done he thought, as Valgn’s angry voice reverberated around the chamber.
: : “Come on Jones!” He shouted madly, throwing his gaze left and right. “I know where you are!” He called, hoping Jones wouldn’t be able to call his bluff.
: : “OH YEAH!” Indy yelled grasping a nearby vine to steady himself. “Then why don’t you shoot!” Indy shouted smiling; he had caught on to the edge in Valgn’s voice and knew that he was shooting blind.
: : “Very well then Jones. Have it your way.” The gun went a final time, however it was not meant to kill, instead the lead bolt drove towards the golden idol on the pedestal between the two, knocking the precious gold into the air.
: : Indy’s eyes widened as he watched helplessly, the idol flew through the air, almost straight towards him. But it was falling just short of his grasp. Taking a flying leap Indy just barely grabbed it. As though in slow motion he fell to the ground, the upper half of his body emerging into the light. For a moment Indy lay still caressing the idol in his hand.
: : Then the angry grinding of a thousand year old trap broke the silence and Indy scrambled to his feet and moved to he center of the light just as a huge stone slab slammed down behind. Scraping his back and barely missing catching his whip underneath.
: : Breathing a sigh of relief Indy repositioned his hat on his head and slipped the idol in his pack. He took two strides towards Valgn prepared to knock the senses out of him when two more slabs slammed down beside the first, forming a semi-circle around the pedestal.
: : Glancing up at the ceiling he saw three more slabs swaying on unsterdy hinges.
: : Cursing under his breath Indy flew at Valgn taking him down in a low tackle. And throwing them both out of the light just as the last three slabs of rock slammed into place completely closing off any access to the pedestal.
: : Grabbing Valgn by the collar and raising him to his feet Indy slammed a fist into his face then shook him violently. As he did this, a small round disk fell from Valgn’s pockets.
: : Hearing the sound of something else falling Indy ducked instinctively only to have the barrel of his own gun shoved behind his ear.
: : Breathing heavily Valgn reached out a hand. “ Now give me de idowl.”
: : That’s as far as he got. With a short movement Indy elbowed him in the gut just as a loud cry rang out.
: : The screech was inhuman and it gave Indy the creeps. Glancing above him his eyes opened wide as he saw the hugest snake he had ever seen in his life. The gigantic cobra stood at fifteen, no twenty feet, it’s jaws about twenty feet long.
: : Screaming like a child Indy grabbed the small object Valgn had dropped and ran out of the throne room in a mad dash.
: : But what made him sick was the scream louder than his of Valgn’s demise.
: : He was about to stop and pay his respects to the man when he remembered that there was a huge snake after him and he doubted that one man could appease it’s appetite.
: : Just as these thoughts registered in his brain the huge green coils of the monster snake wrapped themselves about his body and began to squeeze.
: : Crying out Indy looked up into the jaws of the huge cobra and prayed. But the snakes grip grew tighter. He heard a few ribs snap and scream more out of fear then pain.
: : Suddenly his mind cleared. The snake had a small bone stuck in its teeth. It looked harmless where it was, but from Indy’s point of few it was an obvious weapon.
: : As much he hated it, he would have to get inside the snakes mouth to get it.
: : Squeezing his eyes closed Indy waited as the giants snakes mouth opened over him. Then with a violent wrench he freed his hands and grabbed the bone wrenching from the snake’s mouth and pulling a tooth with it.
: : Screeching again in an inhuman way the snake’s head reared back and it’s grip loosened just enough for Indy to get both hands free. Using all his strength Indy drove the bone deep into the body of the snake.
: : And he was free. The coils loosened and he was dropped several feet to the ground. As he hit, his ribs spasmed and he lay catching his breathe for a moment, fully expecting the snake to eat him up in one gulp.
: : But nothing happened. Standing up slowly, Indy turned his head towards the snake. The huge animal lay immobile. It didn’t even breathe.
: : Indy let out a victorious woop only to catch his breath as a deeper rumbling ensued. Glancing towards the entrance he shuddered as a huge stone slab started to fall.
: : With a violent tug Indy freed his whip and dashed madly for the exit.
: : The stone was three feet from the floor as Indy slid under it and rolled out the front entrance.
: : Standing Indy, breathing heavily, stared at the stone slab and laughed. He enjoyed the joyace moment but after a moment his knees buckled and he fell to the ground dozing off into a much needed sleep.
