CHAPTER ONE

THE NORTH POLE - 1938

Indiana Jones shuffled through the knee-high snow. He hated the snow, the cold wind, and everything else that goes along with winter, and he was in a foul mood. He couldn't wait to get to the trading post and make the exchange so he could get back to his warm house, sit in front of a fire and relax.
He walked a few more minutes before he reached the front door of the trading post. He passed two sled dog teams, and opened the door. The heat and smell of whiskey hit him in the face. He surveyed the room, and saw the motley group of gold miners, eskimoes, and hunters. But the person he had come to meet was nowhere to be found!
Indy walked to the counter, which doubled as a bar. "Jacques Devoreaux?"
The man behind the counter ignored Indy.
Indy repeated, "Jacques..."
The rest of the name fell silent in Indy's throat as he felt the barrel of a pistol shove into his back.
"Doctor Jones?" the voice behind him asked, in a thick French accent.
"Yes?"
"Do you have it?" the Frenchman asked.
Indy was unphased. "Wouldn't be here if I didn't"
"Walk" Frenchy said, as he poked the pistol deeper into Indy's ribs.
Indy walked, until he found himself being forced into the back room
of the establishment.
The room had sparse furnishings, and the room was dominated by a large woodburning stove in the center of the floor. Indy could feel the heat roiling from the stove.
Two men stood inside the room. The first was large, with a craggy face. His mouth gaped open to reveal several broken teeth.
The second guy was smaller, but his eyes were crazy. They darted here and there, never landing on one place too long.
Frenchy pushed Indy into the room. Indy stumbled and barely missed landing on the red hot stove.
"You will give me the idol now," Devoreaux snarled.
Indy pulled his bag from his shoulder slowly. He began to reach inside, but was halted by the cocking of Jacques' pistol.
"It's in the bag" Indy said.
"Toss the bag here."
Suddenly, Indy arched the bag upward, hitting the stoves pipe, knocking it loose. Heavy black smoke littered the air. Bullets whizzed by Indy, although Indy knew that they were just shooting at shadows. Indy crawled across the floor, below the smoke.
He bumped into the mammoth legs of the large henchman. The behemoth glared at Indy through the smoke. A huge hand came down to grab Indy. Indy, a pantleg in each hand, tugged with all his might, and the thug fell over backwards. There was a large crash as the giant fell through a window. The cold air blew in, thinning the smoke.
Indy took advantage of the chaos and dove out the window, landing on the goon. Indy rolled off and ran, looking for a fast way out of there. Not seeing any vehicles, Indy jumped on a sled.
"Mush!"
Nothing.
"Mush! Mush!"
Nothing.
The three creeps rounded the corner. The wild-eyed one let loose a shot.
The sled dogs took off, nearly spilling Indy from the sled.
The three guys jumped on the other sled to give pursuit.
All around the frozen countryside, the three guys chased Indy, but they slowly lost ground. Indy with only one on his sled, was more than a match for them.
Indy looked over his shoulder, searching for his pursuers. As he turned to the front again, a reindeer stepped in front of the sled. The dogs stopped too quickly, sending Indt falling to the hard tundra.
Slowly, everything faded to black.
