Chapter 5

Annie was up in the attic a few days later, rummaging though old trunks and papers. Now that she knew the truth about her family, she was anxious to find out more about her grandfather and her mother.
Not that people believe me though, as she remembered the conversation she had in ICQ with a few people. They laughed at her and said it was just her imagination, except the few lot from the Indyfan site. They believed her and kept asking questions about her grandfather. She told them what she knew and decided to look through the trunks in the attic.
Annie found one object familiar to her. She blew the dust off the cover and carefully turned the brittle pages. The Grail diary! My great-grandfather’s Grail Diary!, she thought as she looked at the book fondly. She then found another book, a pale red color, as she opened it and read,
“We were in a bit of a jam today. Eliot and I tracked down Indy and Patar in Goa. When Eliot left, insisting that I stay, I decided to try to find Indy on my own. I grabbed my gun, dressed in gear I had, and almost left when Roshann, a man from Indy’s past adventure in India, abducted me…”
Annie’s eyes widened, Grandma’s journal, realizing. She never met her grandmother, who died more than thirty years ago from cancer. But she was told of her feisty character, her gentleness and determination. Uncle Michael said that her mother was similar in those aspects, as well as the rogue and savvy demeanors that she inherited from her father. The more and more she learned about her mother; the more and more anxious she was in meeting her.
Annie heard loud voices, raising up and down through the thin walls. She gently crept down the stairs to hear her aunt and uncle arguing.
“Michael, you’re not going…”
“Nikki, she’s my sister. She needs me.”
“Lauren’s a grown woman. She can take care of herself. She’s not a little girl you used to save from scrapes.”
Michael groaned in frustration, “How would you react if you got a telegram that your sister’s in danger in Belize?”
Annie’s hands flew to her mouth, Mom. Mom’s in trouble. She went to her room, grabbed her backpack and threw clothes and passport into the pack. She lifted her mattress and pulled out an envelope full of money she saved from birthdays and Christmases. She grabbed a piece of paper and wrote a note to her aunt and uncle. Before she climbed out the window, she went under the bed and grabbed the one relic she found in the attic that she treasured…Indiana Jones’s famous fedora. She stuck it on her head and left towards the airport.
While waiting to board a plane, she spotted a computer for public use to access email. She emailled her two friends from Indyfan…Indiana Jayne and Deirdre Campbell…and wrote:
“I’m on my way to meet my mom in Belize. She’s in trouble and no one can save her but me. Wish me luck.”
She signed off and went to board her plane. She sighed in her seat and said,
“Ready or not, Mom, here I come.”
