: Chapter 9 -by Indiana Jayne
:
: "Annie! Holly's here to see you!" Annie's mother called out as she knocked on the room door. Silence.
: "Annie?" Nicole turned the knob and let out a gasp instantly. Annie was gone! A strong gust of wind which blew in through the open window sent a piece of paper on the bed to Nicole’s foot. She picked it up and read.

: To my beloved family,
: I heard the news about my mother in Belize. I've gone to see if she needs me. Don't worry, I'll be fine!
: Love,
: Annie.

: Nicole felt her knees wobble as she snatched up the phone to inform her husband.

: Ben, friend of Indy could not believe his ears when Annie told him her story. Was this girl for real? Is she really who she claims to be? All these thoughts raced through Ben like a Ferrari. But if she is a fake, then why is there something in her eyes and in her tone that is so convincingly serious? he thought quietly.
:
"....so that's how I got here and met you," Annie ended her explanation. She placed her fedora on her lap and took a sip of her hot tea. She sighed heavily and looked down at her shoes. "What if my mother doesn't want me back anymore?"

: Ben shook his head, "No way. That's impossible. Of course, she'll want you back! Any normal mother wouldn't disown their child just like that. I bet she's missing you this very second too."

: Annie smiled at Ben's words. It was true that Lauren wanted her daughter to have a happy stable life. But Annie hasn't even met her mother so it was all hard to say. Annie felt her urge to cry. She quickly excused herself and headed towards the restroom.

: Suddenly, she heard a loud thud as she passed the restaurant's storeroom. It was followed by a muffled angry voice. Annie quietly peeked into the room through a tiny crack on the door. Two men were inside ; a waiter and a tanned, burly man. The burly guy had pinned the waiter up against the wall and looked threatening.

: "Don’t mess with me, pal," the man asked through gritted teeth. “Now tell me. Where is the lady?” The waiter gulped.

: “Sir, all I know is that those archeologists left for the Hopkins Village,” The burly man sent a fist into the waiter's stomach. Annie felt her heart skip a beat. The waiter let out a painful moan and sank to the floor. He fainted. Then, the man muttered something under his breath. Annie leaned closer and suddenly felt numb.

: “You’re in trouble now, Lauren Jones…….”

--------

: Meanwhile, back at the table, Ben’s mother had called his personal cell phone. She seemed rather serious.

: “Ben, something came up at your father’s office and it doesn’t look good. So your father and I have to go back and check if things are okay,” Ben’s mom explained.

: “Wha-?? But we’re supposed to be on vacation!” Ben complained with
a hurt look on his face.

: “I’m sorry, dear, but not to worry!” Ben’s mom tried to be cheerful. “You can still stay here in Belize with Mr. Gunter, your father’s friend. He’s an antique shop owner and he loves traveling. I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun with him.” Ben narrowed his eyebrows.

: “Okay, but who’s Mr. Gunter? I don’t recall dad mentioning him.”

: “I’m not so sure either,” Ben’s mother replied. She paused a while. “Ben, I have to go now. Your dad and I have to board the plane. We’ve got all our luggage, don’t worry. Mr. Gunter should be there to meet you any minute. Take care and enjoy yourself, all right? Bye!” Ben placed his phone back in his pocket and sighed sadly. Suddenly, he heard somebody calling out to him.

: “Ben!” It was Annie running towards their table and she looked very pale. “Remember when I overheard that my mom was in danger? I think it’s really urgent and I need to warn her now!”

: “Calm down, Annie,” a concerned Ben took her by the shoulders. “Now tell me what happened.” Annie stopped to catch her breath but failed when she noticed the man from the storeroom heading their way. Oh, no! Annie’s heart cried.

: “Hi, you must be Ben,” the man greeted with an extended hand. “I’m Mr. Kenneth Gunter. Your dad told me that you would be here.”

: “Hello, Mr. Gunter,” Ben shook his hand. “And this is my friend, Annie Jones.” Mr. Gunter looked startled at the mention of her surname.

: “Why, hello there, Annie,” he greeted as he eyed her cautiously. Annie could hardly manage a smile. “Anyway, Ben, why not you pack your bags and come to stay over at my home here for the rest of your vacation. I need to attend to some important matters in the next few days.”
: Ben agreed although deep in his heart, he felt rather disappointed because Mr. Gunter didn’t intend to take him sightseeing.

: “Come on, I’ll help you pack,” Annie tugged Ben’s arm and dragged him out of the restaurant and as far as possible away from that frightening man.

: “What’s wrong, Annie?” Ben asked once they were out in the lobby. Annie poured out the whole incident she witnessed.

: “Ben, I have to get to Hopkins Village before he hurts my mom! You can’t stay with him either. He’s dangerous,” Annie was clearly very worried.

: “Annie, I don’t know,” Ben looked frustrated. They kept silent for a while. Then, Annie sensed it.

: “You don’t trust me, right? Come on, I’ll prove it to you!” Annie led him back to the restaurant. Mr. Gunter was still at their table eating a sandwich. They crept into the storeroom and what Ben saw convinced him immediately.

: “Now do you believe me that your dad’s buddy isn’t Mr. Nice Guy?” Annie asked. Both of them exchanged glances.

: “Okay Annie, after I pack my bags, we’ll take the next bus to Hopkins Village. Right away!” Ben said. He wondered if it was too late to call his parents. But he couldn’t leave Annie all alone here in danger even though he could still make it. Plus, Annie was really determined to find her real mother.
: Just as they turned their heads towards the exit, there stood Mr. Gunter in their path.

: “Looks like I was right about you, Annie. So you are related to Lauren,” he laughed menacingly and turned to Ben. “So where do you think both of you are going? Hmmmmm……?” He unsheathed a dagger and started waving it in front of them.

: Ben smirked. “Far away from you, that’s for sure!” And with that, Ben grabbed a food trolley nearby and rammed it into Mr. Gunter. His actions stalled enough time for them to escape.

: “Come on Annie!” Ben grasped Annie’s hand and both of them ran out of the hotel. They ran blindly pass several shops and lonely eateries. Annie looked behind and saw that Mr. Gunter was getting closer.

: “He’s gaining on us!” Annie exclaimed. “Let’s head for that market over there!” She pointed to her left and they ran through the streets, blending in with the crowd, leaving Mr. Gunter searching for them in the large mob of hawkers and locals.
