That's right. In fact, that is how the trap is described in the novelization as well. I guess they figured since Indy was so calm with several spiders on him at the beginning of Raiders, why would a single spider be a problem now?

: It's from the scene toward the end of the movie - The Word of God. If you notice as Indy starts to step on the letters, his foots goes through the floor on one letter. This is were the spider should be. You also see, Indy himself off. Take a look again and you'll see.
