: : : I have a few questions.

: : : 1) When Indy whips the poker out of Toht's hand in the bar scene, is it really possible to have achieved this without hitting either Marion or Toht in the face?

: : : 2) Is it possible to swing with a normal David Morgan whip, or do you need a special cable fitted version?

: : : 3) The David Morgan site suggests that the 10 foot version was used predominantly in the films, but longer versions were also used. Do they mean that the 10 foot model was only used when the whip was seen attached to Indy's belt, or was it also used in some of the action sequences as well? In other words, is the 10 foot model long enough for any of the whip tricks, or is it only just for show?

: : Satipo, 1. Yes it is possible to do that stunt with out hitting either person. Although I suspect they used a visual effect to achieve it in the film.

: : 2. You can swing on the Morgan whip, however swinging on them is definitely not recommended. It can stretch the thong, alter the whips taper, and basically damage or ruin the whip. According to David Morgan, no cable center whips were made of for the Indy movies, although they did use some in the Mask of Zorro.

: : 3. The whips used were a variety of lengths for various stunts. You can do most tricks with a 10ft whip, but shorter whips are more often used for precision work and longer whip work better for wraps. A 10 ft whip is harder to keep off the ground, and therefore is going to be more difficult to work with, especially if you have never worked with a bullwhip. Hope this helps.

: Thanks for the info. Do you mean that, although the 10 foot whip can do many tricks, it isn't best suited for any of them as it is an in between size? Also, if the whips are easily damaged by swinging on them, does this mean that the whole concept of swinging on whips is a Hollywood invention that has no historical basis? I'm just trying to gather the facts before I order a Morgan for myself.

: Many thanks,

: Satipo

From my personal experience, swining on whips is possible, but not practical. For all the time it takes to wrap the whip just right, or to unravel it when you land, I can't imagine it was used much in real life. The most practical hollywood application I can see is the scene in the Cairo streets with the arabian henchmen. But it could still save your life one day...especially if you own bulls on a farm.
