Indy book question

I've just started reading The Philosopher's Stone today. I am about 20 pages into it (really excellent), but I have a question about the Anaconda scene. How big can an Anaconda get, seriously? Can it really be 38 feet? How big was it in that movie, Anaconda (which really sucked I might add)? Probably half the things in that movie were really fake (especially the special effects, how awful they were). Anyway, will someone tell me the truth about the Anaconda snake.
