I've wondered about this myself. I believe he would have been too old to have been drafted, at least within the normal ranks. As someone mentioned before, those intelligence officers may need him to pull something off. As far as joining up himself, it's hard to say. Indy's patriotism, politics, or world views were never brought up in the films, other than the fact that he hates Nazis. I know in the YIJC, he fights for the Belgians in WWI, but I don't know if he was there for any cause or if it was just one more adventure for him to embark on (I never had the opportunity to watch the show much). I would say that given his hatred of Nazis and enjoyment of being away from class, he would have participated, but under special circumstances. He would not have been there with the grunts.
