Indy was too old to be drafted, but not serve. However, with his background,
the military would have loved him for the Office of Strategic Services (the predecessor of the CIA).
Or they could have just used him elsewhere.

His remark about having already served came during a year America was not
at war, and most didn't want to intervene in Europe. But when Japan bombed
Pearl Harbor, I have no doubt he would have volunteered his services. And I
think the OSS would have snapped him up!
