Chapter 10

Indy and Kali arrived in Delhi later that night at the room Cianelli offered them. Indy was amazed by the place – two bedrooms with bathroom in each one, a kitchen full of supplies, everything imaginable. Indy was staring at the place from the doorway as Kali said,
“Nice place.”
“Sure is,” looking around.
Kali walked over to the liquor cabinet, brought over a bottle of Scotch and two glasses. Indy took the glass offered and said,
“Where does Cianelli get his money?”
“He’s a businessman of sorts. Knows people in high places.”
Indy had a sinking feeling in his stomach, remembering the Holy Grail adventure with his father. Walter Donovan was the same way until he found out he was a Nazi sympathizer and wanted the Grail for himself. He hoped Cianelli was not the same way.
“So,” Kali said, “What do you plan on doing with the money he’s offering?”
Indy looked at him and said,
“You’re only interested in the money?”
“No, my friend, but it can buy happiness.”
“Not always,” Indy said, finishing his drink and getting up.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going over my notes and see the best way to go about finding the Heart of Shiva. To be ready for tomorrow.”
“Of course,” putting down his glass, “Bright and early?”
Indy nodded as he went into one of the rooms, pulled out his papers and glasses and got to work.
There was another person watching them nearby – Dawn Rampage. She overheard their conversation and rushed to a telephone nearby, asking for a long distance connection,
“Hoover here.”
“Special Agent Rampage here, sir.”
“What have you discovered?”
“The man Henry Jones is with is Patar Kali, an archeologist here in the East. They are looking for an artifact Cianelli wants — the Heart of Shiva, I believe.”
“Very good. Anything else?”
“Cianelli’s offering a sum of money for it. I don’t know of the amount.”
“Good, Rampage. Stay in sight of them.”
“There’s more, sir.”
“Yes?”
“Jones is living with someone in New York. I’m uncertain who.”
“Does he pose a threat?”
“It’s a she, and no, I don’t believe so.”
“I’ll send someone to look into it. Keep it up, Rampage.”
“Yes, sir,” as she hung up.

Eliot was looking around Indy and Kate’s house. He noticed the small fixtures, pictures, and numerous of artifacts in every room. He noticed a liquor cabinet in the corner, and helped himself to a drink. He then realized he forgot to call in to Hoover to where he was. He went to the phone and dialed,
“Hoover.”
“This is Ness. I forgot to mention I’m in New York.”
“Sudden trip to warn your friend, perhaps?”
“No,” sharply, “I’m visiting a friend from college.”
“Then I have a job for you, Mr. Ness. Rampage told us of a woman staying with this Jones character…”
“I know.”
“You know? But you haven’t been in contact with Jones for thirty years.”
“The friend of mine happens to be his fiancée.”
“Fiancée, interesting.”
“She doesn’t know anything.”
“How do you know?”
“I just know,” looking around the room.
“I see,” staying quiet, “See if she does, and we’re watching you, Ness. Don’t do anything foolish.”
“Yes, sir,” hanging up the phone.
Eliot looked around for anything of where Indy was going. He went through closets, drawers, and various rooms. His head jerked up when he heard the front door slam two hours later and heard,
“Eliot? Where are you?”
“Be there in a minute,” as he rushed out to the front room where Kate was looking over the mail. Eliot smiled and said,
“Anything interesting?”
“Just bills,” tossing it on the table, “What are you doing in New York?”
“Its’ rather complicated.”
“Try me,” as she poured herself a drink and sat on the sofa.
“Do you know about a man called Cianelli?”
“Indy mentioned he was paying for this trip.”
Eliot stared at her and said,
“That’s it.”
“Yes,” looking at him, “He’s in trouble, isn’t he?”
“We don’t know.”
“We?” nearly choking on her drink, “My God, Eliot, who else is in on this?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Eliot, we go back as kids in Chicago. Tell me.”
Sighing, he said simply, “FBI.”
