It is very sad news. He was a brilliant director who made several classic films. He also inspired and encouraged George Lucas and Steven Spielberg when they were student film-makers. I know that Spielberg was regularly on the phone to him for advice even after his own success. I never met the great man himself, but I know one of his daughters, and she will of course be devastated by this.
