: : : : : : : : Today I received the bag that I ordered from What Price Glory last week. It is in excellent condition apart from a couple of aspects that I will now ask you fellow bag owners about.

: : : : : : : : 1) What is the purpose of the grey metal disc that is attached to one side of the bag, and was it removed from Indy's bag, as I do not recall seeing it in the films?

: : : : : : : You can see the disc in the films, watch in Raiders where the truck explodes, or the scene with the crowd parting for the arab swordsman. I think what it was used for was to give the string a place to anchor to. The idea was to wrap the string around your waist and secure it so it wouldn't flop around while running.

: : : : : : : : 2) What condition were your bag's metal parts in when you bought it? On mine, the strap rings and adjuster do not have the smooth polished surface I imagined they would. Instead, they are fairly corroded looking, but not rusted. Whereas, the disc I refer to in question 1 has about a third of its surface rusted, and has marked the surrounding material with an orange stain.

: : : : : : : I live near to What Price Glory and went to Jerry's house and picked through the bags. On nearly all of them there was corrosion or dulling of the metal parts, and many had small rust stains.
: : : : : : :
: : : : : : : : 3) What are all the bits of string for?

: : : : : : : The one going from the small outside pocket is for tying around the waist, the other inside the bag ( attached to the small pocket in the middle flap) is for tying around a little can of sealer for the gas mask. One of my bags from What Price Glory had a very rusty can of this in it.

: : : : : : : : 4) My bag is dated 1943. Does this mean that it would have been impossible for Indy to have really had such a bag in the years the films took place?

: : : : : : : Of course it does! :-)> These anachronisms are great, aren't they? It's similar to the Last Crusade zippo, where the film is set in 1938 and the lighter is of the current modern style.( Yes I know that the style hasn't changed much, but it is still the wrong style)

: : : : : : : Anyway I hope this helped. If you are too disappointed in the quality of your bags call the "Roadster Factory" and order some of their bags, which are un-issued and in PERFECT shape. I am much happier with my clean bags, even though they cost a little more.

: : : : : : : The Roadster Factory number is on this page I think. I'll post back later with the info (I have a catalog from them)

: : : : : : : Adios ;-)>

: : : : : : Regarding the Zippo, based on the current Zippo literature, the style is indeed correct as the original Zippo of 1933 was rectangular with the hinges located on the outside of the case and sharp square corners. The design was changed in 1935 to the current rounded corner with internal hinged version, and has remained so to this day. Source, "Zippo History" circular, 1997, from the Zippo Co. Regards. Michaelson

: : : : : Does the book show if the top of the lighter is flat?(still with rounded corners and internal hinge). Zippo puts out a replica of their lighter from 1937 that is different (slightly) from the current lighters. It has a flat top as opposed to the rounded one available today.

: : : : : I thought that if Crusade took place in 1938 that it should have had this style of lighter. If you could check out your book again, would you let me know? I've always been curious when they dropped this design in favor of the current one, which has been around a looong time.

: : : : : Thanks, John

: : : : : PS- If anyone likes zippos, both the replica of the 1933 and 1937 lighter are very cool. Interesting fact- in 1992 Zippo put out a replica of their original lighter from 1932. Then they found out that the company didn't actually produce any lighters until 1933. Zippo now reprocuces the replica with the bottom of the lighter saying 1933 replica instead of 1932.

: : : : Just checked. It only shows the two styles. Could be the angle the photo was shot, too. Regards. Michaelson

: : : Thanks Michaelson, I'm going to see if I can't get a hold of Zippo and find out for sure. This question is starting to nag at me.

: : : Thanks again, John

: : Go to their web page. It has a ton of information, as well as an online order form to get free literature and catalog. That's where I got mine. You get a HUGE package of goodies. Zippo is another one of those companies who really love their customers, and attempt to keep a life long arrangement with them. I have been very impressed with what I've seen. Let us know if you can scare up some more details. Regards. Michaelson

: I sent for the info from Zippo. I called them and they said that the rounded top lighter was made available in 1938! I guess Elsa was trendy, always looking for the next new thing. Anyway, the vintage style has been around since 1937, and has never really left production for any length of time.

: I looked for info on some Zippo bulletin boards, but those places are DEAD. Indyfan forum has a lot more visitors.

: Love the Forum,
: John

Thanks for the back up info, John! You're right, too, after this forum, all others are standing still, aren't they. Appreciate your extra effort. Regards. Michaelson
