Chapter 15

Marion looked at Indy with fascination as she said,
“Jones, I never saw you care for a woman before.”
“Except for you.”
“You never cared. Always digging the world from one place to the next. I never understood it.”
“Kate doesn’t either,” Indy said with a smile, “In fact, she didn’t want me to go.”
“And you went anyway?”
Indy nodded as Marion said,
“She doesn’t have you trained yet, Jones.”
Indy got up, put the fire out, and said,
“Good night. I’ll see you in the morning,” going into the tent.

Kate didn’t realize she fell asleep. The next morning, she found a note from Eliot saying:
”Kate:
I went to find Indy for you. It’s much too dangerous for you. I hope you understand.
Eliot.”
“Damn it, Eliot,” cursing to herself. She ran to her suitcase, put on pants, a work shirt, and her boots. As she tied her hair back, she looked in the mirror, she said,
“I’ll search the mountain myself if I have to.”

The next morning, Indy heard someone walking outside of camp. He grabbed his .455 Webley, ran out of the tent, and said,
“Don’t move.”
“Indy, Indy Jones.”
“Who’s there?”
“An old friend,” stepping into the light.
Indy looked at the man dressed in a heavy coat and asked,
“Who are you?”
“You don’t remember me?”
“Should I?”
“We shared a room back in Chicago. Eliot Ness.”
“Eliot…Eliot!” looking dumbfounded.
“Surprise, surprise.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Kate’s worried about you.”
“You didn’t bring her here, did you?”
“She’s back at Goa. I figured you wouldn’t want her here.”
“Did she send you?”
“No, I went to warn you about Cianelli in New York when she told me you were here. She insisted on coming with me.”
“Damn,” Indy said as Marion came out of her tent. Eliot’s eyes jumped and said,
“Good thing, I didn’t bring her with me.”
“What?” turning around to see Marion, “Oh, Marion. She’s just a friend, Eliot. Nothing more.”
“Good,” looking at him sternly, “The last thing Kate needs is to have you leave her.”
“Indy,” Marion asked, “Is she pregnant? Is that why you’re getting married?”
“Of course not,” Eliot said, “Kate didn’t want that to happen the first time.”
***********************************************************

Kate took out her small revolver from the suitcase and put in her pants when she heard a knock on the door. She went to the door and saw a man standing there,
“May I help you?”
“No, my dear,” he said, “But you can help me.”
Frowning at him, she asked,
“What do you mean?”
“You do know Indiana Jones well don’t you?”
“Well enough,” looking at him, “Now, if you don’t mind…”
“I do mind, Miss…”
“Tyler.”
“Well, Miss Tyler, you’re going to help me find the greatest find of the century.”
Kate’s world went black as Roshann drugged her by sticking a needle hidden in his hand in her arm. Kate’s body went limp as Roshann beckoned one of his cohorts,
“Take her back to headquarters. We’ll deal with Jones later.”
***************************************************

“Eliot, what did you mean by that?” Indy asked.
“Kate should be the one to tell you.”
“Eliot, tell me now.”
“Alright,” sitting down, “But she wanted to tell you first.”
“Get on with it.”
“You see, Kate knew how much you wanted to be an archeologist, Indy. She was looking forward to going to Sorbonne with you until she found out a day before graduation,” as he paused.
“What did she find out?”
“She was pregnant, Indy. I was with her when she found out.”
“You knew, too?”
Eliot nodded, “She said she was going to tell you but was afraid that you would drop everything and marry her. Then hate her for the rest of your life. She couldn’t do that to you so she dumped you.”
“What happened to the baby?”
“It died,” mournfully, “She miscarried four months later. Kate never got over it, Indy. She felt she was punished because she left you.”
Indy sat down and said,
“I never knew. Poor Kate.”
“Then she lost her parents around the same time. A plane crash over the Atlantic, I believe.”
“I have to find her.”
“But Indy,” said Patar, coming from the tent, “What about the treasure?”
“We’ll come back,” then turned to Eliot.
“Lead the way, Eliot.”
