: "I don't believe in magic, a lot of superstitious hocus-pocus."

: That's what Indy said when Marcus was trying to warn him about the supernatural nature of the Ark. Given this portrayal of Indy in Raiders, how can authors of the novels (or fans) justify the extreme amount of magic seen in books like "Secret of the Sphinx"? These stories take place before the films, but it's clear that in 2 out of 3 films Indy doesn't believe in such things as magic. If Indy had experienced the events of some of these books he would KNOW magic existed - so how can we take these far-fetched "prequel" novels seriously?

My feeling is that while each Indy novel/film is enjoyable in itself, they tend to weaken the whole Indiana Jones concept when viewed in terms of continuity. Take, the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Temple of Doom and the beginning of Last Crusade, as examples. Do they really portray a convincing account of how Indy became the character he is in Raiders of the Lost Ark? Uh, uh, not on your nelly! Although continuity may have been intended during their creation, if you really want to enjoy Indy novels or films other than Raiders of the Lost Ark, you should treat each book or film as a separate entity unrelated to what came before it.

Adios,
