Temple of Doom question

In the beginning of temple, when Indy's friend gets shot, and the glass breaks, he seems like he doesn't know he'd been shot. I think if you'd been shot with a pistol at point blank range, you'd know it! Maybe its just the movies, and they're trying to make it dramatic, but I have no idea. Ideas?
