Back in the 50s during the McCarthy era, there was the Hollywood blacklisting. That was where, the government blacklisted any American filmmakers (and people in general) for being part of the Communist party at any point during their lives. Basically, their careers were destroyed. Elia Kazan admitted to being part of the Communist Party briefly in the 30s, and ratted out other Hollywood people who were with him. Many careers were unfairly destroyed, and he continued to make Oscar winning films afterward. Some people thought of him as a hero, others thought of him as pure slime. That is why there was a great disparity of people applauding and not doing anything.
