: : Spielberg won Best Director for Saving Private Ryan. Was anyone suprised when Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture? I was and I wasn't. It was an excellent film but SPR deserves it more.

: I don't know why I care about such things but it makes me really mad! "Saving Private Ryan" was not only the best picture of the year but probably one of the best of the decade after "Schindler's List."

Naaaah, I love Steven Spielberg's work but Saving Private Ryan wasn' that
great. It had the two best battles scenes ever filmed but the two hours
between the battles was pretty ordinary. If the movie didn't open with
D-day it would have been a major snore fest. Instead it gets your blood
pumping hard enough that D-day is all you think about for 2 hours. I thought
the split was a perfect result IMO. Spielberg deserved to be best director
for pulling off the battle scenes. SPR is still a good movie but it doesn't
really hold up scene for scene to other Spielberg classics. Shakespeare in
Love was fine entertainment from start to finish.

: I'm glad it got best cinematography, though. Kaminski really deserved it!

Yeah, the movie had a great look but I think the cinematography in the
the Thin Red Line was more beautiful but it was definatatly a worthy award.
