Well, it's been an awfully long time since I last saw TOD, so can't remember anything specific from it (remembered the wink, though...). Anyway, losing balance would be more of an error that they left to the film than improvising; it could be compared to the scene in Star Wars in which C-3PO falls a step when Luke scratches dirt of R2-D2 and it starts showing the infamous hologram message. I don't think anyone calls tripping 'improvising'. ;)
