"The desert is 3 weeks in every direction"

How could the desert be three weeks in every direction?!? It would take the trucks, etc. quite a long time to gety there wouldn't it? I was under the impression that Cairo was fairly close, considering Sallah and Indy got there pretty quick. What do you guys think?
