The Influences behind Raiders! What were they?

Hey,
Now on a less heavy note! When Raiders was released George Lucas sited at least two republic serials as the inspiration for the movie. What were they? I seem to remember one called "Spy Smasher" being mentioned but I can't remember if I'm right or not! I was just wondering if anyone knows what these serials were about, were they any good, and did they influence Raiders? I recently saw an old (1933?) Karloff movie "The Mask of Fu Manchu" which had some similare elements to Raiders! What do you guys think influenced the creation of Indiana Jones?
