: I was watching some old movies from the Thirties and Forties last week and I noticed that all the fedoras had the rear of the brim turned up. The front was turned down, some really low, but the back was always up. That must have been the style in the Thirties. Indy's, however, is turned down, like safari hats. I suppose it was to protect the wearer from the sun. So, when Indy goes into a mens store in New York, Boston, or where ever, to buy a new hat (and he must have gone through a lot of them) what he sees on the shelves are fedoras with the rear of the brim turned up. He must like the style, but since he will be working in a hot climate such as Egypt, India, or Hattay, he wisely takes the fedora home, heats up a pan of water, and steams and reshapes the rear of the brim to get a little extra protection. Could be.

I think most of the scenes the fedora brim is turned up in the back
as you indicate was the style (and still is with fedoras). Some
scenes do show the brim turned down, but those, I believe, are in
the minority. In addition, you can snap the back of the brim down
without the use of steam.
