An alternative to rivets is a 2-piece unit (I don't know the technical
hardware name): one of the pieces is a screw and the second piece
looks like a rivet, but its shaft is threaded to accept the screw.
It looks great, works extremely (they won't come apart unless you
unscrew them), yet can be removed very easily if you want to take
the strap off when cleaning your bag.
