If you read back into ancient warfare you'll find that bowmen had a
great 'first strike' ability. Alexander the great used them frequently
in conjunction with phalanx and cavalry. Even the Romans used the bowman to
a great advantage. Granted, the English longbow had a remarkable advantage
but, I believe earlier types of bow could reach that distance. Yes, an arrow
at long distance begins to lose its momentum and gravity pulls it downward
however, archers 'en masse' would always aim their bows slightly higher or
much higher to allow the arrow to arch and cover a distance with greater
striking effect.
I am no expert on how to use a bow an arrow and I am going to find out the
distance differences in bows. I'll let you know what I find out. Interesting
question.
