You're right. Ford was "suffering from fatigue and intestional illness..." so he just shot him to make the scene less suffering for himself. I got this info from "Star Wars to Indiana Jones, The Best of Lucasfilm Archives" by Mark Cotta and Shinji Hata. If you don't have it I suggest you pick it up at the bookstore.
