Sub-shenanagins

Can anybody come up with a theory on how Jones got aboard the German Uboat? I know he swam from Tananga's(?) ship to the sub, and climbed aboard, but here's the catch: U boats SINK. I'm quite sure the sub did the old dip-trick on the way to the "island" and Indy didn't stand a chance on the outside. Did he open the airlock and let himself in, or what? If so, how did he exit the boat upon arrival at the "island" without being noticed? I have always wondered about that one.
