Actually, I thought Indy's ways appeared to be pretty solid already. Observe his "That belongs in a museum" mantra. None of the events of that day gave him that value system. That day just brought things into focus for him. No doubt, losing the cross to those guys was one of the things that drove him, nagged at him. I prefer to think that focusing on the events of that day gave importance to the whip, snakes, etc., rather than the other way around.
