: Cool! Could you post detailed info on how to get there?

: Cheers,

: The best way to get there is to fly into Delhi (Indira Ghandi International Airport) and hire a driver to take you south about six hours into the state of Rajasthan and its capital, Jaipur (pronounced "jay-poor"). I recommend an Indian government approved guide service so you don't get ripped off or, worse, waylaid. Renting a car and driving the main road yourself is guaranteed suicide as laws are nonexistent, camels and cows frequently wander in the middle of the road, and nobody stays in their lanes (not that the lanes are marked anyways). Jaipur is situated in the bowl of a valley with the northern entrance guarded by forts high atop mountains on either side. The Amber Fort, which "Pankot Palace" was rendered from, is the largest of these forts just north of Jaipur. It is an extremely popular site for travellers, although not because of the Indy Jones tie-in. Every guide and hawker in town knows exactly where the Amber Fort is. You have the option of walking up the steep, stone causeway to the entrance of the fort, or you can pay a small fee (400 rupees, about $10) to ride an elephant up ala Indy, Short Round, and Willie. Entrance fee is 10 rupees (25 cents U.S.). Either way, you'll be mesmerized by the size of the place and the many rooms, cooridors, arches, and ramparts that you can explore.

Guide services in Delhi frequently run multi-day trips from Delhi to Jaipur and then to Agra (where the Taj Mahal is located) before returning to Delhi. This circuit is known as the "Golden Triangle" to Indians because of the revenue its archaeological and historical sites generate from tourists. Even if you decided you just want to visit Jaipur, it's a good idea to spend the night there in that city because nobody wants to drive back to Delhi at night. Not unless you're Mad Max or something. Also, you get to spend more time at the fort and see other sites in the area. -MP
