Submarine dive

I think Indy takes a little too much on faith in this scene. By climbing onto the sub he leaves himself with no other outlet. If the sub dives (as subs generally do) then Indy is screwed. Incidentally, since the Nazis are on a secret mission it is reasonable to assume that they would dive so not to be seen and Indy would be committing suicide by climbing on top.
However, it is a movie and Indy climbing on the sub makes for a great scene and the movie might lose something if he just stayed on the Bantu Wind like a reasonable person.

If you read my little essay "Could I be Indiana Jones" posted Saturday night, then you know that I would never have swum out to the sub. But I don't know what else could be done. If Indy stayed aboard the Bantu Wind then he'd have lost the Ark and Marion. There's no way that boat could have tracked a submerged submarine...
