: It didn't occur to me until yesterday, but the Pan Am Clipper in Raiders is a Short Sunderland British WWII flying boat, not a Boeing 314 Dixie Clipper like I posted in the Indy Planes thread earlier, or Martin M130 China Clipper. Therefore we can probably assume it's meant to represent the China Clipper, which would have started flying accross the Pacific in '36, since no Sunderlands were used by Pan Am.

: The Sunderland looks kind-of like the 314 at first glance, so I just assumed it was the real thing, but closer inspection in the From SW to IJ Lucasfilm archive book proved me wrong. The best way to tell the difference is the single tail on the Sunderland vs. a triple empennage on the 314.

The picture shows a Short S23 C Class Empire Flying Boat

The Raiders/Sunderland does look almost just like a 314 with the diagonally repeating rows of windows. However, they should have shown a Martin M-130 for historical accuracy. I don't know why they used a British Plane other than it was handy to have one nearby make a model of. The Boeing 314 wasn't around in 1936 either and I'm not sure about the Sunderland shown in Raiders but some of the Empire Class were, but not flown by Pan Am.

I thought you might find this stuff interesting. The famous U-Boat hunting Sunderland WW2 flying boats were based on these pre-war "Empire" civillian flying boats. I think the Raiders plane doesn't look like one of these Empire class (the nose is longer) but it looks a lot like a military WW2 Sunderland to me, only without the turret in the nose for a machine gun.

Did they copy a specific pre-war model Sunderland w/out the turret or did they just look at military plane and modify the model of the plane to suit their needs to evoke the look of the 314 China Clipper?

Any info on the specific model plane copied/used would be great!

Cheers,
Abner
