Submarine question...

I was answering an earlier post about the submarine goof in "Raiders" and noticed something I hadn't realized before.
I mentioned that the novelization said that Indy lost his hat out on the ocean. I think it said that the fedora fell off while Indy was asleep. And he left his whip tied to the periscope.
Then it occurred to me, when we see Indy climb onto the sub in the movie, he's not wearing the hat or the jacket and I don't think he has the whip on him either. Did he leave all his stuff on board the "Bantu Wind?"
He doesn't have any of his gear with him when we see him on the island later.
If he had taken his stuff, would the jacket, hat and whip have survived being submerged in sea water for hundreds of miles?
Did he have to get all new gear for "Last Crusade?" It seems like the beginning of "Last Crusade" implies that Indy has had the same hat since he was twelve.
What do you all think about all of this???
