Interesting theory, although improbable. Let's face it, Indy's no religious sap, and if the Ark upon touching would kill a religious king in a second, I don't think Indy could get close enough to pull the sand trick. The power lay in the commandments, remember? And I don't think Indy could've hid several very large broken pieces of very old stone with latin words spelling out "Thou Shalt Not..." very well, not even from the oxymoronic Army Intelligence.
