: Hey Brisco,

: What does scope format mean? I've never heard of that before.
: I'm aware of the different ratios 1:66:1, 1:85:1, 2:35:1 and the fact that mattes can be installed into the projectors for different formats.
: Just curious

"Scope" refers to the way in which a 2.35:1 film print appears in the frames of 35mm. film. If you look at the frames of a scope formatted movie individually, they look squished up from side to side. They require a special lens on the projector, as well as the mattes (or masks) you mention. The lens stretches the image out lengthwise, so you get the full widescreen effect. At least, that's how I understand it works. I guess I'll know more first hand tomorrow night after I show my first 35mm film. :)
