As one might be able to tell, Belloq doesn't have much luck in the romance department, being a mercenary traveling all the time. To make matters worse, his rival happens to have fallen in with a beautiful and traveling girl.

Methinks he merely wanted ANY female companionship, thinking not from the heart but the head, and the wrong one at that. I mean, I don't think how he could possible imagine she might feel anything for him after allowing her to be thrown into a pit of snakes, intimidated by Toht, and tried to kill her boyfriend.
