Now someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the braided nature of the whip's thong allows it to act similar to those old "fingercuffs" that when streched, contract and tighten, and it is this "tightening" that caused it to grip objects as it wraps around them. Also, the fact that it is leather certainly allows it to grip better than rope.
