: Lucas worked with Philip Kaufman in 1973 to get some groundwork started on what would eventually become Indiana Jones. He wanted to get someone to direct the movie for him since he was too caught up in the Star Wars saga. Nobody was interested in doing the movie. Then, on the famous Hawaii vacation in 1977, Lucas pitched his idea to Spielberg and he was really enthusiastic about the idea. Lawrence Kasdan eventually wrote the final script for Raiders. Basically, Spielberg helped bring Indy to the screen but didn't create the character. He just elaborated on the basic groundwork. In Raiders Philip Kaufman is given story credit with Lucas. Spielberg is only credited as director. Spielberg always thought of himself as a director-for-hire when making these movies (much like Michael Curtiz for Casablanca in the old studio days). Hope that helped.
