When you mentioned this to me on ICQ, I forgot to ask you where did your friend find this information about the scream? It is perfectly possible that they could have dubbed the voice in post-production by someone else if Spielberg wasn't satisfied with the initial scream. At any event, it's hard to say what they did. Maybe there is a book detailing this.
