I've never heard this story before so I couldn't tell you if it's true or not but I wouldn't be surprised since it's not an unusual practice. In "Gone With the Wind" during the scene where Scarlett swears to never be hungry again, there's a sound of her throwing up. Vivien Leigh didn't want to stay around all weekend rerecording the sound so they had Olivia De Havilland (who played Melanie) redub the sound for her.
