The Whip wraps and holds for a couple reasons. One is the better gripping characteristics the braided leather thong and the solid leather fall or lash. The other is the speed and weight of the whip wrapping around the target which causes the whip to lock itself in place and then tightens as you pull on it. Keep in mind that some whips will work better than others for that trick. Hope this helps.
