Possible submarine solution

I've been thinking (uh-oh... better run!)......

Submarines were powered by batteries and by diesel at the time. Batteries, which were used when under water, were extremely limited. Diesel, used when on the surface (and also used to charge the batteries) was used as often as possible.

Once Indy made it onto the deck of the sub, he should have been fine because it probably wouldn't have submerged unless it came close to another ship.
