I am Irish and have been to Newgrange twice when I was younger. I believe the wait for December 21st, which is the shortest day of the year is now 2005 and the light lasts about a minute or less and it is supposed to be even more spectacular than the simulated light. The tombs are 5000 years old which makes them older than the pyramids.
Did you see the other two passage tombs in Knowth and Dowth? they are not as spectacular but still worth a visit. There are still some burial sites around this area that have not been excavated yet.
