Actually, since we were at peace at the time of Raiders, there would have been very little need to submerge at all. In regard to Indy hanging on to the snorkel, not a good argument. Uboats frequently went far below periscop depth to evade capture. Periscope was used for attack and to get bearings.

The Uboat in Raiders was the same one from Das Boot as well. IT is one of the few surviving Uboats from the war. I believe (not sure) that it is available to be toured somewhere in Europe. Lucas heard that it was avaiable for shooting and wrote it into the script. The script originally called for a merchant ship or destroyer of some kind
