Indy as a literary hero

So we all agree that that Indiana Jones (I will never think of him as Henry jr.--bad idea) is the epitome of the cinematic adventure hero.
And many of us are convinced that we can make him into a literary hero, that is to say, a hero in print.
But what do you guys really think...
Should Indiana Jones be a hero of the written word? Or should his adventures be reserved strictly for the screen?
Since I still have the dream of someday seizing control of the Indy novel series, I'd like to know what the fans (many of whom will buy an Indy book even if it sucks) really think. Maybe Indy was never meant to be the subject of a book. Maybe that spoils it somehow.
