The only thing I can think of is that your `American' version is taped from TV, and not an un-cut copy straight from Paramount. I seem to remember that when `Temple of Doom' aired on TV in North America YEARS ago, that scene played out like you described. This would be around 1986 or 1987. All of the violent scenes (including the dinner scene) were toned down to make them more...palatable (groan) to the sensitive prime-time audience.
The same thing happened with `Raiders,' with lines even added. Who can forget "I'm your new damn partner!" I would expect that if `Temple of Doom' ever aired again on prime time TV it would be a complete version. We now live in a day and age that on TV, "Anything Goes."
